The “If I Was A…” TikTok trend sees couples ask their romantic partner what they would be if they were a season, element, color, crystal, animal, and more, giving the opportunity to find out just how they see them.
It’s a romantic and cute trend, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming the center of hilarious copycat versions from those not-so-on-board, too, only making the trend bigger.
TikTok users ask their partner what they would be and use the answer in a video, creating complex and impressive montages that users say take them hours on end.
“If I was a ….according to my…”, the text initially reads on-screen, paired with a photo of the couple before the answers start reeling in. Montage videos made up of photos hinting at the answer appear in time with the music, often “Run Boy Run” by Woodkid, before settling on a monotone screen. Users have warned, however, that it’s not a quick process, taking hours to create.
The answer is revealed in text, again in beat to the music, with the first half of the word flashing up on one beat while the rest comes on the next.
That’s the core of the trend, and the outcomes are sweet, gaining views in the millions. “#ifiwasa” itself has 111 million views.
TikTok user @lcdsmartphone said it took her five hours to make her version of the “If I Was A” trend, editing the video from start to finish. According to her boyfriend, she’d be a daffodil flower, coffee and cloudy weather.
In a comment, she explained the method she used to make her edit on the Capcut app. “Here I use a total of 21 photos per theme (19 images + 2 backgrounds for writing), 1s per photo, only 5s for 11th photo, 4s background item, 5s color.”
@selbazara spent “forever” making hers, which showed her boyfriend thinks she’d be spring as a season, a fox if she were an animal, and Dubai as a city.
Not Everyone Is a Fan of the TikTok Trend
Like almost every trend on TikTok, not everyone quite likes it. Users such as @giuliapellegrini4 took the opportunity to poke fun with her own version.
Recreating the music using her own mouth, the TikToker utilized her boyfriend to create the photo montages using his own phone and hand, swiping through the photos and showing them to the camera. The hilarious take on the “If I Was A” TikTok trend has gained over 2 million views.
Other users duetted the viral videos, attempting to guess the answers from the photo montages before being shown the words.
